Designer Spotlight: Tracy Popken | Mario Alberto
Tracy Popken
http://www.tracypopken.com
Designer: Tracy Popken
Tracy Popken is inspired by archetypes in vintage clothing that flatter the human form and she is driven by the richness of hand crafted clothing. Her approach as a designer of distinguished clothing is focused on quality. Embracing her role as vintage clothing seamstress feeds her practice of shaping timeless silhouettes.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
I took a part time job 5 months ago at Pockets Menswear in Highland Park Village, one of the best menswear shops in Dallas, selling high quality Italian men's suiting. My goal was to learn more about menswear at it's purest. Learning the subtleties of fit, style, and combining patterns and colours has been every bit as inspiring as I hoped it would be. The PIN show would be my first effort to combine that experience with my working knowledge of womenswear.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
In 2013 I am re branding under my own name after working for the last 3 years under the name Salvage House. I hope to focus my alterations business exclusively on vintage clothing and expand my custom clothing clientele. I am further sharpening my pattern grading and hand sewing skills, and will be developing a line of timeless clothes available in all sizes that can be bought off the rack or personalized in a made to measure format at my studio. I'd like to eventually sell those clothes to a few boutiques as well as my private clientele. I'd like to be the person you go to for a personalized, classic, well made wardrobe staple.
Where can we find your line?
I currently sew for private clientele by commission and have a limit number of pieces available off the rack in my studio which can be seen by appointment. I am in the process of setting up an etsy store.
What do you hope to gain out of participating in The Pin Show?
Exposure. I'd like to gain a few clients wanting custom clothing. I think the deadline will also push me to bring my current ideas insto fruition faster than I would otherwise.

Designer Spotlight: Hueso Outlaw | Smith&Brandon | LADASKA MECHELLE
Hueso Outlaw
http://www.huesooutlaw.com
Designer: Anthony Muelle
Hueso Outlaw is a lifestyle brand that embraces Texas: its undeniable Spanish history, its independent nature and its colorful legends that no other state's history can boast. The inspiration comes from reviving 50s rockabilly and 80s outlaw country, but with a biker edge and a James Dean classic simplicity. At the heart of it all is a true rock & roll attitude.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
The main inspiration will always be Rockabilly music. The look of Hueso Outlaw is derivative of that genre, which happens to encompass an entire lifestyle of music, fashion, custom cars and motorcycles. It's this timeless lifestyle that defines the attitude of my niche, and in turns inspires the appeal of Hueso Outlaw. Since "hueso" is Spanish for bone, there will also be a broad use of Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) themes.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
I want this line to have tremendous brand equity, from the logo to the look. The logo should be as recognizable in the fashion world as Apple or the Nike Swoosh. I want people to recognize the vintage look of Hueso Outlaw clothing like they recognize the black palettes of Yohji Yamamoto and Vivienne Westwood's punk attitudes.
What Mark Nason did to boots is what I want Hueso Outlaw to do with snap-button shirts. I want to dedicate my focus on a niche marketing scheme that will remain loyal even after the novelty of mainstream appeal fades. And like Mac, it will have a cult following that recognizes the originality and quality of well made Hueso Outlaw clothing. As I design each collection, it's with the imperative that it not be trendy like Ed Hardy, Affliction or Rock Revival "club-wear", which has been overdone with a surplus of embroidery and embellishments. I will maintain integrity to its classic look.
I believe this integrity and consistency will have the kind of appeal that will allow me to reach out to boutiques, as well as movie and music production companies for celebrity styling. The mainstream cycles of acceptance are short, so my goal is to avoid being seen as a fad and have a fringe appeal to those that prefer to lend their loyalty to classic styling that is functional, not opulent overindulgence that is impractical. The ultimate goal is to expand the line into leather boots and fragrances.

What do you hope to gain out of participating in The Pin Show?
The Pin Show will coincide with the premier of my first official collection of Hueso Outlaw, which will be to introduce the core of the line, the snap-button vintage-style shirts. Up until now the focus has been building the brand through t-shirts and accessories. I hope that the grand exposure offered by the Pin Show will be a huge stepping stone to getting the attention I need to prove that Hueso Outlaw is a new, young and legitimate apparel brand that dares to break the Dallas trendy-retail stereotype.

Designer Spotlight: Milli Starr | Ragg Doll | Charmaine Marshall
Millie Starr
http://www.etsy.com/shop/millistarr
Designer: Laura Del Villaggio
Using the finest materials available, Milli Starr creates spectacular hats and headpieces, each meticulously hand-blocked and hand-stitched using centuries-old couture methods. The designs are inspired by the rich history of fashion but re-interpreted for a modern lifestyle in comfort, shape, and color. Milli Starr produces five collections each year: Spring/Summer, Autumn/Winter, Bridal, Cocktail, and Derby.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
My Spring/Summer 2013 collection entitled “Enchantment” is inspired by the vast and serene landscapes of New Mexico, as well as the state’s rich art and cultural heritage. Hat colors are muted and reminiscent of the high desert and of Georgia O’Keefe’s oil paintings: lavender, terracotta, sand, sage, goldenrod, charcoal, turquoise and coral. Hat styles are organic and bold, including wide-brimmed straw hats with sculpted crowns and free-form fascinators and fedoras. Materials include hand-dyed sinamay and parasisal straws. Emphasis will be placed on hat shape and color (ombre hand-dyeing techniques), with minimal trims.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
After operating as a primarily bespoke millinery business for almost a decade, I am currently developing limited edition styles that will be available for wholesale purchasing to upscale hat boutiques across America. In addition to seasonal collections, Milli Starr will also offer Bridal, Cocktail, and Derby collections. I will market my line directly to upscale hat boutiques by mailing professional look books, line sheets, and purchasing information to hat boutique buyers, rather than participating in traditional wholesale apparel or gift markets. I hope to establish my business on a national level, fostering relationships with my retailers, and targeting customers who are stylish and confident, appreciate impeccable craftsmanship and heirloom quality, and truly understand that fashion can be art.

RaggDahl
http://www.raggdahl.com/
Designer: Christine Porter
Overall, I aim to inspire, motivate and please people who share the same passion for clothing and art and history as I do. RaggDahl is the combination of history, future, attention to detail, fabrics and textures. RaggDahl, is not a noun, but a verb, it is what we do, live, love, to put every emotion conceivable into one piece that will be cherished by one human soul until that soul fades.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
My upcoming line is a blend of a post apocalyptic lifestyle, with the feminine nature of the female body. Light fabrics drape the body with tucks, layering and flounce. Embellished with soft leather and metal accents, providing the protection of a cruel new world. Light colors that once might have appeared deeper, create the illusion of wear and sun bleaching. Dark colors accent and protect the delicate layers. Who said a woman couldn't be beautiful and dangerous during the end of the world?
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
Within five years, I am working towards having a small production team and to make it to New York Fashion Week. Ultimately in 10 years or so hoping to have my own free standing boutique. To get to this place in life I have chosen an unorthodox path for a steady incline. I joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 2011, to build the discipline I lacked as an artist and to help pay my school loans while I focused on my career and saving the funds to hire a patternmaker. Within the Army, I drill once a month in which all of my pay goes to a savings account specifically for RaggDahl. I am hoping to deploy twice within the next 6 years for two reasons; my school loans will be almost paid off and I will be able to experience different cultures.
My most urgent goal would be to get into the Pin Show of Dallas, hoping to gain some public interest and expand my portfolio. After that, I am hoping to make it into Dallas Fashion Week. My plan is to get into as many fashion shows as I can, so that I am always working, fully submersed in fashion design. By this time next year, I am planning to have a business plan written for RaggDahl and will be throwing an independent fashion show. I plan on presenting my show and my business plan to investors around Dallas. Knowing my passion and drive, all of these goals will be attained.
Where can we find your line?
Not available at retail locations. I do custom design orders and freelance design work.
What do you hope to gain out of participating in The Pin Show?
By participating in The Pin Show, I will not only gain the knowledge of the entire experience, but the chance to meet people with the same heart as mine. I am ecstatic to even be able to apply to this show. This will be a learning experience and a memory I will treasure. Possibilities of career openings, connections and publicity will open many doors. I just want to show people what I love, why I love it, and inspire as many people as possible to chase their dreams.

Designer: Charmaine Marshall
The line is "wearable art" and is anything but understated. The hand-crafted designs in the collection draws on the colors and textures of nature, incorporating rare stones, feathers, wood, antique African brass, coral and other exotic elements. The collection as described by fashion blogger Charlie Omana of Facon d' Etre, "Her pieces look like cultural artifacts gathered from various anthropological expeditions."
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
The inspiration for my upcoming collection is taken from the bold pops of colors an textures that were seen in the American Designers shows during the 2013 Spring Fashion Week in New York. While still mixing in the ethnic inspirations that my jewelry exhibits.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
The goals for my brand over the next 5 years is to establish my line as a collection of wearable art and of one of a kind statement jewelry. To get my brand in local high end stores such as 4510, Stanley Korshak, Tooties, etc. just to name a few. Expanding to stores around the country. Then taking the brand globally. Our ultimate goal is to eventual take the brand to a multi level brand, meaning branching out to other avenues such as clothing, leather goods and home accessories
I hope to accomplish this by having exposure through avenues such as The Pin Show. By co-branding with other companies and designers. Also, to present the collection to potential investors to help grow the business and the brand in order to make my goals come to forewishen.

Yomono
yomono-fashion.blogspot.com
Designer: Charlotte Elliott
Yomono stands for unwavering commitment to sustainable fashion and social responsibility. All pieces are handmade in Dallas, TX using materials that are organic, vintage, recycled, or low-impact. Inspired by past decades and future endeavors, Yomono believes that understanding where we've been will guide us where we want to go.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
For my FW13 collection, I imagined a steam age adventurer meets space age sophisticate. I built on things I love: cover buttons, heavy canvas, harnesses, and bow ties. Classic workwear details get a sleek update with a touch of aggressive femininity. Boxy fits evolve into rounder shapes, with special attention paid to collars.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
Over the next 5 years, I plan to grow Yomono to the point that it can be my main source of income. To get to that point financially, I will increase my brand presence locally and on the web, and take on more custom orders. I have plans to teach a corset making class and will continue expanding my knowledge in the corsetry category.
My industry experience working with local cut-and-sew factories has made me fluent in price negotiations, quality control, and timeline enforcement. I’ve already started to grow my brand identity through frequently updating my blog, Facebook, Twitter, and Etsy store. I will continue to aggressively seek clients through word of mouth and pinpointed marketing at relevant local events, such as burlesque shows.

My main goal is to increase my brand recognition through visibility to the local market and beyond. The press attention will draw in new customers and showcase my FW13 line. With this extra push, I can increase business and grow to the point of opening a studio outside my home.

Marek+Richard is brand that offers funky fresh, casual knitwear designs for men that include undergarments, tanks and t-shirts. The individual collections within the line are inspired by popular trends in menswear, modern art, and popular culture. Marek+Richard products are designed and produced locally in a commitment to revitalizing American made manufacturing in the Dallas area.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
My inspiration for the upcoming collection definitely will come from the fiery excitement I get from seeing my line on the runway again!
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
In the next five years we would love to see Marek+Richard recognized on a national and international level as an emerging “American Made” label in the men's underwear/active wear category. As we continue to grow the brand in retail locations nationwide, we hope to expand the brand by participating in local events, growing social media avenues, broadening our product assortment and finding innovative sourcing techniques.
Marek+Richard also plans to create new revenue streams by broadening our product assortments. We plan to introduce screen-printed merchandise in Spring 2013 and we are fully confident that in 2014 Marek+Richard will branch out into woven and knit swim-wear. This will not only benefit our current accounts, but will also allow us to expand into more specialty swimwear boutiques.
Hard work and the combination of these processes will ultimately allow Marek+Richard to reach these lofty aspirations in the next five years.

What do you hope to gain out of participating in The Pin Show?
We hope to gain greater recognition within the Dallas community and to spread awareness of the Marek+Richard brand. Our retail accounts in New York and other east coast locations seem to move through our product very quickly and we want to create this same behavior in our local retail settings. Therefore we would love to showcase our Dallas made products to a large audience of people in the area. The Pin Show also offers a great opportunity to network with members of the fashion industry, which of course is key. The support of fashion through events, such as the Pin Show, is crucial to the success of young, up and coming designers such as ourselves. This support is greatly appreciated by everyone who participates in this event, especially at Marek+Richard.

SixChel represents the many faces of the modern urbane woman, sophisticated, smart, confidently sexy and stylish as a matter of fact. The wearers of Sixchel are not afraid to express their voice, ideas, mood or style...they epitomize one who is strong to stand alone or strong enough to head her family...they are lovers of life and live it...they are proud to show their sexy bodies in all its forms...they evoke confidence, and can silence a room upon entering. Dina’s line is simply this, beautifully made clothes worn by the woman who is Sixchel, Sexy Chic Cool Chic.

The inspiration for the next collection is The Spirit, Ruwach or Pneuma. It is based on one's inner strength seeing the transformation of the darkness being overcome by the breathe of the spirit. The spirit flows over the calmness as it brings energy and life.
As a designer, I truly believe the clothes a woman decides to strut in, creates her mood and because women are creatures of many emotions, her wardrobe should be ready to display the inner beauty of every woman during any period of her lifetime.

Designer Spotlight: Melancholic Design | Nine Muses | d.p.c. by Dora Yim
Melancholic Design
http://www.jessethaxton.com/
Designer: Jesse Thaxton
With Melancholic Design, I seek to convey a structural, tailored look without sacrificing concepts of femininity in design. Express care is taken to employ elements of historical, avant-garde fashion and make them accessible, modern, and wearable to the current woman regardless of size. With futuristic lines, mixes of wool, leather and silk, the hard-meets-soft juxtaposition of menswear meets women's wear; my goal is to give each piece a stand alone quality that can either be worn as a staple piece in an ensemble or combined with a woman's tastes in order to display the elements of design that most inspire confidence in herself.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
Retro Pulp Science Fiction, Color blocking, Orchids and Mayan architecture

From an artistic perspective, I look to further solidify my voice in my design, expand my technical skills, and continue to learn from those that came before me through every outlet possible. I firmly believe the learning process is never done, and thus I look to learn more and more over the years to come.

Designer Spotlight: Rochelle Rodriguez | Kickie Boldness | Dija Swimwear
Rochelle Rodriguez
http://www.rochellerodriguez.com/
Designer: Rochelle Rodriguez
Rochelle Rodriguez is a women's contemporary designer. Inspired by the personal style of Bianca Jagger and Audrey Hepburn, her line is all about honoring and embracing the female curves and elegance that women personify.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
I am a romantic in every sense of the word and my line is a direct reflection of that ideal. These designs embrace how women want to be seen and adored, coupled with a dash of strength and independence. The line is a love story. Each dress embracing the romance of being a woman. From the flirtation of a ruffle or tease of a deep open back, to the sophistication of a tailored little black dress. It's all about honoring and embracing the female curves and elegance that women personify.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
When I started my business in 2007, I had a great start. My line was in over 60 stores across the country, press was building, and I even made to the window of the famed "Kitson" boutique in LA. Then the economic crisis hit in 2008. I was too new of a business to sustain. Boutiques that had ordered my line were closing with no notice, credit cards were declining left and right and I was left trying to navigate that unfamiliar territory. Ultimately, I ended leaving Los Angeles after 8 years to completely start over back home in Dallas. It's taken over four years to get back to my line, but I did it! With all that being said, my goals are much different than when I first began this journey. In my mid 20's I wanted to conquer the world, one dress at a time. I wanted celebrities to give me a shout out on the red carpet. Today I'm more focused on the woman than the success. I want a very special boutique in Dallas where women can escape and try on clothing that makes them feel confident and beautiful-regardless of size. In this little store, I can work with women one-on-one on a custom dress for that special gala or wedding or party. They can shop my current looks off the rack and lets not forget about every woman's obsession...the shoes! There will be tons of beautiful shoes and accessories. But the icing on the cake is the wine bar in back when you're done shopping.

Although they don't have much they make the best out of life with what they have and fashion is their freedom. These looks offer a feel of UK fashion, very form fitted towards the bodice and brings versatility.
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
I was inspired by different looks I have research from the United Kingdom. With that I use a bit of a twist based on how I feel about fashion. I kept things a bit conservative, but the looks can also transition to something fun. I wanted to play around with plaid print and lace adding a touch of leather/pleather.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.

Designer: Laura Lewis
Dija Swimwear is a line of designer bikinis and one-pieces that combine flattering cuts with interesting details and pattern combinations. My pieces combine feminine details with slightly sexy silhouettes and some architectural influences, which give the collection its unique personality. The latest collection from Dija swimwear includes bikinis, one-pieces, and some coverups, all meant for the confident, sun-loving fashionista!
What is the inspiration for your upcoming collection?
My newest collection is inspired by the vacationer. For me, traveling is about appreciating the natural landscapes as well as the beauty of buildings, skylines, and other man-made structures. My collection includes pieces with feminine floral patterns and ruffles as well as some simpler pieces with strong architectural details. Many of my one-pieces can also double as tops to take the piece from the beach to a night on the town.
Tell us about your goals for your line over the next 5 years and how you hope to accomplish them.
I currently sew all of my pieces myself, and reproduce individual pieces on an order-by-order basis. Over the next five years I hope to market my collection to local retailers and start producing my pieces on a larger scale. I hope to soon find a local manufacturer capable of producing small lots of my designs. I plan on entering designer competitions and being involved in more local fashion shows to win/raise money to use towards accomplishing my production goals. I also plan on entering as many online national competitions as I can, such as the Zappos Emerging Designer Competition, to gain exposure and raise funding. I have also sent pieces to the Sports Illustrated Swimwear team for the past two years and I am hoping to be in the next issue to help market my collection.
